So erkl\u00e4rt Mary Brammer die Abwesenheit ihres Mannes Kuddl. Dieser hat in Fuhlsb\u00fcttel eine dreimonatige Haftstrafe abzusitzen. Obwohl ihre Verwandtschaft misstrauisch ist, geht auch zun\u00e4chst alles gut. Problematisch wird die Situation f\u00fcr Mary, als der holl\u00e4ndische Frachter \u201eWilhelmintje van Gelderland\u201c, auf dem Kuddl angeblich als Schiffskoch angemustert hat, auf hoher See sinkt. Nicht nur, dass die Verwandtschaft sofort flei\u00dfig dabei ist, das Erbteil zu verteilen, werden Mary gleich von 2 Verehrern Heiratsantr\u00e4ge gemacht. Auch der inzwischen aufgetauchte uneheliche Sohn Kuddls macht die Situation f\u00fcr Mary nicht einfacher.
